Barriers to Becoming a Lawyer

It’s too much red tape

Barriers are requirements. Requirements in order to do something. There are barriers to becoming a lawyer, helping people and businesses with their legal issues, like money, education, and challenging bar exams. Most requirements are really barriers that benefit certain groups of people.

Money

I been out of law school for 5 years and haven’t been able to sit for the bar exam because of cost. There are no fee waivers for low income people, no welfare programs for the bar exam, and no scholarships for disadvantaged individuals. People are expected to pay their own way whether they come from poverty or wealth.

High wages in a profession are necessary to compensate an entrant when great expenses must be incurred for learning its trade.”

Bar Exam Fees

The South Carolina bar exam is $1,000. Arkansas and Florida are also $1,000. Oregon is $450 and Indiana is only $250. If you are late filing the application, there is a late fee penalty. In South Carolina the late fee is $500, many some bar exam takers pay $1,500.

Why are some state’s bar exam extremely high, while others are low? The practice of law is regulated. Being a hair stylist is supposed to be regulated, but states do not enforce occupational license regulations for hair dressers and sometimes tattoo artist.
